About Shayla

Shayla grew up in Calling Lake and moved to Calgary about one year ago after graduating from high school. She had hoped to attend college, but her plans did not work out, and home had become difficult because of her mother’s boyfriend. She wanted a fresh start and greater independence.

Around that time, Shayla met Jay online. They began dating, and Jay offered her a place to stay while she figured out school and work. At first, Shayla felt supported and was happy to help make their apartment feel like home.

Over time, Jay began expecting more from Shayla. She was responsible for most of the cooking, cleaning, laundry, errands, and keeping the apartment running. He reminded her that he was paying the bills and providing their home and became increasingly critical when things were not done the way he wanted.

As money became tighter, Jay started talking about ways Shayla could help them financially. He gradually suggested that she could make money by spending time with men and began asking her to consider meeting people he knew. Shayla was uncomfortable with the idea and unsure how to respond.

Jay also became increasingly controlling and intimidating. He monitored who Shayla talked to, controlled her finances and transportation, and reminded her how dependent she was on him. After about a year in Calgary, Shayla left the apartment while Jay was asleep and went to a community centre.
